Fast Start For Ford In January As UK Market Leader Continues Retail Sales Momentum

BRENTWOOD, Essex, 07 February, 2018 – Market leader Ford is maintaining strong momentum into 2018 with increased retail sales for both passenger cars and commercial vehicles.

Highlights of January's sales figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) include:

•Ford Fiesta remains UK top-selling car

•Transit Custom and Transit are first and second in commercial vehicle (CV) sales, with Ranger and Transit Connect fourth and fifth

•Total Ford CV registrations are more than three times those of its nearest rival

•Ford car retail sales rise by 2.2 per cent

•Ford CV retail sales jump 14 per cent

Andy Barratt, Ford of Britain chairman and managing director, said: 'Ford's strong 2018 retail start builds on the launch of the all-new Fiesta and the unrivalled strength of our vans, which appeal to the broadest cross-section of private buyers.

'This year we will launch many more exciting new vehicles, including the Fiesta Active crossover, highly anticipated Fiesta ST and new Tourneo executive shuttle – suggesting our showrooms will be busier than ever this year.'

According to the SMMT, January car sales were down 6.3 per cent at 163,615 registrations, compared with January 2017. Ford sold 19,654 cars last month, a lead of over 7,000 on the next manufacturer.

Ford remains the clear leader in retail car sales, which most accurately reflect the preferences of private buyers. At 14.3 per cent, Ford's January retail car sales share was double its closest competitor.

The Ford Fiesta has been UK best seller for nine years and in January was the leader by a significant margin, with 8,335 sales and market share of 5.1 per cent – accounting for one in 20 new cars sold.

The strength and breadth of the Ford model range is demonstrated by Fiesta (1st), Focus (2nd), C-MAX (1st), Kuga (3rd) and Galaxy (1st) all featuring among the most popular choices in their segments.

UK commercial vehicle sales in January were down 4.2 per cent at 24,291, compared with January 2017. Sales of Ford CVs were 7,315, compared with 7,808 in January 2017. Ford's CV market share in January was 34.8 per cent, compared with 35.9 per cent in the same period last year.

Ford's CV range leads the retail sales segment with 1,629 private registrations and a 26.2 per cent market share in January, 850 sales and 13.7 percentage points ahead of its nearest rival.

Ford's extensive CV range is delivering record levels of sales with CV registrations more than three times those of its closest competitor. All Ford CV's lead their respective segments and four of the Ford range; Transit Custom, Transit, Ranger and Transit Connect make-up the top 'five best-selling CV's in January'.
