Jaegermeister Porsche 962 Completely Restored For Monterey Motorsports Reunion

Monterey, Calif. Echoes of the 1986 1000km of Spa, where the Jaegermeister Porsche 962 driven by Thierry Boutsen (Belgium) and Frank Jelinski (Germany) sped to victory, will come alive over the hills of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca this weekend. Thanks to a full restoration by Porsche Motorsport North America (PMNA), this iconic racecar runs in its Spa-Francorchamps configuration for the first time in 25 years
Porsche Museum Cars – 50 Years of 911 Celebration
The appearance of the 962 is part of a special Porsche weekend at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion. The weekend display will include the North American debut of the latest Porsche 911 GT3 Cup – 2014 edition – and four significant 911 based race cars from the Porsche Museum: the Porsche 911 GT1 driven by Alan McNish/Stephane Ortelli/Laurent Aiello in 1998; the original Porsche 935 78 'Moby Dick' Martini Racing car; the 1977 Porsche 935 2.0 'Baby,' which ran only two races – one of them a win for Jackie Ickx at Hockenheim and a 1972 'Martini' 911 RSR 2.1 Turbo. The cars will in the garage area and will also make exhibition laps, which will be on the track this Friday from 4:20 – 4:40 PM (Pacific) and Sunday from 4:00 – 4:20 PM (Pacific), plus Saturday at 4:20 PM during the Porsche 911 celebration laps marking 50 years of the 911.
Joining the cars will be Vic Elford, Hurley Haywood, David Donohue and Jeff Zwart.
2014 Porsche 911 Cup Car to Debut
The 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup racer, which will begin competition in North America next year, is the latest version of the most produced production-based race car in the world, with more than 2,500 units built since 1988. The new Porsche 911 GT3 Cup is powered by a 3.8-liter, six-cylinder flat engine. It generates 460 hp at 7,500 revs, surpassing the predecessor by 10 hp. A six-speed dog-type gearbox developed by Porsche Motorsport, which is operated via shift paddles at the steering wheel for the first time in a Porsche brand trophy racecar, transmits the power to the rear axle. The new, single piece race wheels with center mount hubs were also designed by Porsche Motorsport. A newly developed race braking system further improves the excellent endurance qualities compared to its successful predecessor. The 380 millimeter slotted and inner-vented steel brake rotors at the front axle are decelerated by six-piston aluminum fixed calipers. The rear axle features a four-piston version.
Porsche 962 chassis #117 – the details
The 962 restoration, in the famous #17 Jaegermeister livery, 962 chassis #117 from Weissach, was also victorious at the Nurburgring Supercup event. Walter Brun drove to victory over a great field of Porsche 956 and 962 prototypes in 1986, beating Hans Stuck, Danny Sullivan, Jo Gartner, Franz Konrad and others.

This Jaegermeister 962 restoration started in 2006 when the components came to PMNA in boxes, with many missing. The company restored the engine and transmission at that time, but the rest of the car remained in apart until the current owner decided to contract PMNA to do a complete restoration. Original drawings for the car were obtained from Germany, and technical experts were consulted both inside and outside the company. Parts were sourced from all over the world; some were even remanufactured by PMNA. Porsche Motorsport North America has established a partnership with the historic motorsports department within Porsche AG's Motorsport Division in Weissach, Germany. The new department provides expert restoration services to the Porsche Museum for many of the vintage competition cars the company owns well beyond the ones displayed in its riveting exhibition center. When ready, a number of these cars will be entered in the increasingly popular vintage racing circuit around the world. PMNA will move its operations from its current Santa Ana, Calif. location to Carson, Calif. where Porsche Cars North America is building its West Coast Experience Center. The new facility is expected to be ready by fall of next year. Aside from housing PMNA's offices, parts storage and workshop facilities, the new complex will incorporate a business and conference center, a human performance laboratory and a number of facilities for customers and enthusiasts that will enable them to finalize selection of their next Porsche or hone their driving skills.
