Gooding & Company's 10th Anniversary Pebble Beach Auctions Saturday Sale Realizes More Than $53.7 Million

(August 18, 2013) – Gooding & Company, official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance® and acclaimed for selling the world's most significant and valuable collector cars, realized more than $53.7 million during the first of its two Pebble Beach evening auctions. 64 of the 68 lots offered, a 94% sale rate and an average price per lot $839,609 with the most notable being the 1957 Ferrari 250 GT 14-Louver Berlinetta (Lot 39) that set a world record for a Ferrari 250 Tour de France at $9,460,000.

'We had one of the most successful one-day sales in our 10-year Pebble Beach history and fantastic excitement surrounding the sale of the 1957 Ferrari 250 GT 14-Louver Berlinetta,' says David Gooding, President and founder of Gooding & Company. 'It's incredible that Saturday's results do not yet take into account many of our star attractions including the 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante and a 1955 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione, which will be featured at our auction following the Concours on Sunday evening.'

The most spectacular lot of the evening was undoubtedly the 1957 Ferrari 250 GT 14-Louver Berlinetta (Lot 39). One of only nine examples built and just eight remaining, this important competition car features coachwork by Scaglietti and is unrivaled in its rarity and beauty. The ultimate Tour de France variant, this car boasts an important racing history including 9th overall and 4th in Class at the 1957 Mille Miglia and a 4th place finish at the 1957 Coppa Inter-Europa. Additionally, it has won many accolades including a class award at the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance®. This highly anticipated lot sparked a round of excited bidding resulting in a final sale of $9,460,000, a world record for a Ferrari 250 Tour de France.

Enthusiasts the world over recognize McLaren's F1 as a prime example of automotive technology and timeless design. Extremely rare-to-market, the car was accompanied stage by its designer, Gordon Murray who warmly described its inception. An elite car by many standards, this turn-key example sold for an impressive $8,470,000 breaking the world auction record for the model after several rounds of competitive bidding.

'Gordon Murray's introduction and the sale of the F1 generated an electrifying level of energy in our auction room. Extensive interest from the US and abroad for this super car culminated in an incredible sale,' says Gooding.

Energetic bidding was also seen for a striking gold 1963 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster. Fondly dubbed 'Goldie,' this ultimate specification 300 SL is beautifully preserved with original factory hardtop and red leather interior. Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadsters are considered by many as a bellweather for strength in the car market. 'Goldie' brought $1,622,500, a new auction record for a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster and a round of applause from the crowd.
