October 24, 2008 by RM Auctions

Classic car fever is set to hit Central London later this month as 100 of the world's finest collector cars roll into Battersea Evolution for the highly anticipated ‘Automobiles of London' event.

Calling all vintage car enthusiasts! Classic car fever is set to sweep over Central London, UK later this month as the curtain rises on RM Auctions' highly anticipated Automobiles of London auction event, October 28th – 29th at Battersea Evolution.

Held in association with Sotheby's, the two-day event is expected to attract the ‘who's who' of the global collector car world, as well as the international jet-set, as 100 exceptional motor cars, including some of the world's finest British, German and Italian luxury marques go under the hammer.

'Building on the great success of our previous European sales, including our Ferrari auction earlier this year when we sold the world's most expensive motor car ever sold at auction - the ex-James Coburn California Spyder- our London auction is set to be another very important event on the global collector car calendar,' said Max Girardo. 'With a spectacular line-up of motor cars and a hotly anticipated cocktail reception, the event is set to not only capture the attention of the automotive world but also the London social scene.'

RM founder and CEO, Rob Myers added, 'Despite recent fluctuations in the financial markets, results from our recent North American events reveal a continued healthy outlook for the collector car industry and indicate the market for alternative investments remains strong. We are delighted to be returning to London and look forward to continuing the momentum set by our previous European events.'

Headlining the exceptional auto line-up are an assortment of cars with remarkable celebrity provenance, from a stunning 1963 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder (Est. £3,000,000 - £3,500,000), as driven by Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu in the hit movie Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, through to a stylish 1955 Ford Thunderbird (Est. £20,000 - £30,000), which once belonged to Hollywood star, John Travolta. Other star attractions with celebrity connections include a stately 1953 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible State Limousine (Est. £90,000 - £120,000), as ordered new for the Royal House of Belgium and used in the royal wedding of Prince Albert II and the Princess Paolo, and an elegant 1924 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Torpedo (Est. £300,000 - £400,000), formerly owned by a number of illustrious owners, including automobile legend and pioneer, Ettore Bugatti; French racing driver and vintner, Maurice Trintignant; champagne heir, Count Frederic Chandon de Briailles; and F1 racing champion, Jean Alesi.

To coincide with the excitement for the world premiere of the new James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, the auction will present an iconic 1965 Aston Martin DB5 (Est. £150,000 - £180,000), finished in Silver Birch and similar to the car that Sean Connery drove in the film Goldfinger. The example on offer boasts celebrity provenance of its own having been featured in the music video for Robbie Williams' smash hit ‘Millennium'.

Other highlights set for the London auction block include the ex-Park Lane Showroom 1997 McLaren F1 (Est. £1,100,000 - £1,400,000) and a stunning 1938 Bugatti Type 57C Atalante (Est. £600,000 - £800,000), formerly owned by a member of one of New York's most prominent families and recently discovered after 45 years in storage.
