July 10, 2008 by The Worldwide Group

Worldwide Auctioneers, whose declared objective for its inaugural Auburn sale is to bring the Grand Classics back to the town where the classic car industry itself was born, looks set to deliver on its promise.

The 1934 Auburn V12 Salon Cabriolet used in the movie 'The Mayor of Hell' and owned by famous actor James Cagney, will join an exceptional line up of fine automobiles to be presented for sale at this years The Auburn Auction.

'Auburn is where the Movie Stars came to buy the most prestigious cars in America', said Managing Partner John Kruse. 'I am thrilled to have one of the most important motorcars produced by The Auburn Automobile Company back in Auburn, Indiana to be sold at our auction. Screen legend and Oscar winning actor James Cagney's association with this car makes it even more fitting'.

Aside from its associations with Hollywood, the vehicle is significant in its own right. Only four 1934 Auburn V12 Salon Convertibles were produced and this is the sole example equipped with rear mounted spare. Its V12 engine was first introduced by Auburn in 1932, delivering a top speed of 93mph, considered astounding in its day. Its restoration was completed by renowned pre-war specialists, Classic & Exotic Cars Inc of Troy, Michigan and the car retains its original engine, body and chassis. In the words of Rod Egan, Managing Partner and Chief Auctioneer; 'The Auburn V12 Salon Cabriolet is one of the most impressive automobiles of its era. The combination of such low production and notable ownership make this car a collectors dream'.

The Auburn Auction, to be held at Worldwide Auctioneers new US Headquarters, now under construction in Auburn, Indiana, is limited to only 80 exclusive and significant motorcars. The sale will take place over Labor Day Weekend on Saturday August 30th at 6pm, as the town coincidentally plays host to the celebrated Auburn Cord Duesenberg Festival, which has for decades attracted enthusiasts from across the US and overseas. General auction preview is on Friday August 29th from 10am-5pm, with VIP Reception that evening from 7pm-9pm. Full details on advance bidding and general admission can be obtained by visiting www.wwgauctions.com or calling 1-260-927-0000.

Quality consignments may be discussed with either Rod Egan or John Kruse on 1-260-927-0000, whilst media and sponsorship inquiries should be directed to Jo Snyder on 1-512 507 7867. The Auburn Auction expands a strategically located annual schedule which includes the Houston Classic Auction in May and Hilton Head Sports & Classic Auction, due to be held this year on November 1st, in South Carolina.
