RARE AVIATION-THEMED COLLECTIBLES TO BE OFFERED AS PART OF THE ROAD ART COLLECTIONWalworth, WI – October 4, 2016--Among an extraordinary selection of more than 1,200 investment-grade porcelain signs, neon signs, gas pumps and globes, oil cans and other such automobile-related relics, lies an unparalleled assemblage of ultra-rare aviation-themed collectibles that most enthusiasts could only dream of owning…until now. Each of the 1,200 items in The Road Art Collection will be offered for sale by Mecum Auctions, Oct. 20-22 in Walworth, Wis. This collection is quite possibly the most desirable group of collectible Road Art® items ever offered at public auction.

Throughout the three-day auction, more than 100 vintage and collectible aviation-themed artifacts will cross the auction block. Though each piece is rare and desirable, there are several highlights including the highly sought-after double-sided porcelain Smith-O-Lene sign (Lot F180). The round sign measures 48 inches in diameter and is remarkably in near-perfect condition—virtually unheard of for a sign of its age. Another feature piece is an original porcelain sign from Shell's aviation division dating back more than 60 years. The wingspan of the sign (Lot F184) is impressive measuring more than 20 feet across.

For collectors looking to add an aviation gasoline globe to their collections, there are at least 25 to choose from including the Air Mail Globe (Lot S50), an exceedingly rare single-lens globe that stands as the only example known to exist. The lineup also includes several neon signs, among them the double-sided Cessna Authorized Service porcelain neon sign with bullnose (Lot F181). A variety of oil cans related to the aviation industry are also part of this amazing collection including some from vintage brands like Fleetwood, Skyway, Clipper, Ace High and more.

'People are more frequently showing interest in signs and products from the aviation trades,' says Dan Mecum, head of Mecum's Road Art department. 'Part of the interest has to do with the sheer rarity behind those products; there just weren't many airplanes and airports in that day, so there were fewer artifacts produced to promote them making these items very difficult to come by. The ones coming up for sale in October are some of the best we have ever seen. This really is a remarkable opportunity for collectors to discover and purchase fantastically rare aviation collectibles.'

To allow for personal inspection, the Mecum Badger Street Facility will host preview hours beginning four weeks in advance of the auction to give potential buyers the opportunity to grade these incredible items in person. Buyers, sellers and spectators are invited to attend this unprecedented event. Doors open each day of the auction at 8 a.m. Auction hours are as follows: Thursday, Oct. 20 at 4 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21-22 at 10 a.m.
