Shadow scored more World Championship points in Formula 1 racing than any other American entry. Powered by the three-liter Cosworth DFV V-8 this DN8-1-A was designed by Tony Southgate and raced in 1976 by the gifted Welshman Tom Pryce at Zandvoort (Holland), Monza, Mosport, Watkins Glen, and Fuji. Tom Pryce, Renzo Zorzi, Riccardo Patrese, and Jack Oliver drove the car in a total of thirteen Grand Prix races and one Race of Champions. It served as a backup car for Hans Stuck during two Grand Prix races.
In 1977 Pryce raced DN8-1A in Argentina and Brazil. Renzo Zorzi, Jackie Oliver, and Riccardo Patrese raced it in 1977 and it served as the backup car for Hans Stuck in the 1978 Brazilian and Argentinian Grands Prix before retiring from active World Championship competition.
In mid-1988, the car was brought to California from London, England. It was brought to the Shadow car factory where the company was developing All-Terrain Vehicles for the U.S. Army. Don Nichols, the originator of the Shadow team, enlisted his racing experts to perform a ground-up restoration on DN8-1A.
The car's racing history includes a 4th place finish at its inaugural outing in 1976 at Zandvoort. This was followed by an 8th place at Monza and an 11th at Mosport. At Watkins Glen and Fuji, it retired early due to engine problems.
