The Karmann Ghia was shown as a concept at the 1954 Paris Auto Show. It was internally designated as the 'Type 14' and it wore styling by Ghia's Luigi Serge. The Karmann-built coupe was positioned to be a halo car for Volkswagen, with a modern design and desirable amenities. It was given a widened version of the Type 1 Beetle platform and remained in production from 1955 through 1974, with over 450,000 examples built during that time. Bodystyles included a Coupe and Cabriolet version.
This particular example was purchased by the current owner from a long-term owner in Newport Beach, California. The engine is a 1192cc flat 4-cylinder unit fitted with a single Solex carburetor and offering 34 horsepower. There is a four-speed manual transmission and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes.By Daniel Vaughan | Feb 2015
