Concorso Italiano embraces all the cultural elements of the Italian style, including music, travel, fashion, and cuisine. There are thousands of vehicles of Italian origin expertly arranged on two well-manicured fairways at the Black Horse Gold Club in Monterey Bay, California. It embraces the finest cultural elements of Italian style with an emphasis on sophistication. What began as a humble gathering of car enthusiasts has grown into the world's largest gathering of exotic Italian cars.
This year, over 300 Ferraris and 80 Lamborghini's took part in the event. It was home to the North American Premiere of the Alfa Romeo Disco Volante Spider by Touring, and there was an impressive display of Touring Superleggera's in celebration of the coachbuilder's 90th anniversary. Japanese designer Ken Okuyama displayed his Kode 57 supercar concept. Mr. Okuyama's resume includes working for Pininfarina where he designed and supervised projects such as the Ferrari Enzo and the Ferrari P4/5.
There were six 50th anniversaries, including the Golden Jubilee of the Lamborghini Miura. It is a vehicle that not only changed the automotive landscape but is arguably the first supercar. The Miura was the first mid-engine car designed and produced for the street, and it helped establish Automobili Lamborghini's reputation which has continued to grow and evolve over the years. In celebration, Concorso Italiano assembled at least eight examples on the upper fairway, all painted in exotic colors that complimented the vehicle's radical design. They sat in close proximity to the other Lamborghini models, which allowed the company's history to be told on the green canvas.
The Fiat 850 and 124 Spiders also had 50th-anniversary celebrations, as did the DeTomaso Mangusta. The Alfa Romeo Spider/Duetto, and Ferrari 330 GTC and GTS were also introduced in 1966. Each marque, organized by model, sat alongside others of the same ilk.
The day's activities began with Mr. Bruce Wanta sharing his relationship with NASA and how he acquired the Mars Rover that was on display at the stage. A short time later, Mr. Matt Stone interviewed Tonino Lamborghini. After lunch, the Fashion Show began followed by an awards ceremony. The ceremony concluded with the announcement of the much anticipated Best of Show. This year, that honor was bestowed upon the 1958 Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France (chassis number 0899 GT) owned by Brendan Gallaher and Michel Stern.
During the mid-1950s, the 250 Europa and 250 GT models were the best high-performance grand tourers on the market. This success prompted Ferrari to build a competition version of the model. Beginning in 1956, the first of the series was crafted by Carrozzeria Scaglietti earning the moniker 'Tour de France' - a race won by Ferrari each year from 1956-1964.
Just 77 of the long wheelbase Berlinetta's were built, of which 37 have single-vents on the C-pillars. The Concorso Italian Best of Show TdF was originally owned by Italian racer Eduardo Lualdi Gabaldi. It competed in hillclimbs of the period, as well as some track races in Monza. It passed through a succession of owners, and in the late 1980s was given a total restoration to the original specification. The current caretakers acquired the car in 2011 and had it transferred to the United States, where it was again restored.
