The Quail : A Motorsports Gathering

The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering is held in Carmel, California with the Santa Lucia mountain range providing the stunning backdrop for the eclectic mix of classic road and race vehicles. Now in its fifteenth year, 'The Quail' is a very grand private garden party that combines automobiles with exquisite international cuisine and award-winning wine vendors.

Going a step further, The Quail showcases the latest automobiles from select manufacturers, some of which use The Quail as the stage for world debuts. This year, Acura debuted the ARX-05 which had been built to IMSA's DPi regulations and scheduled to be fielded by Penske Racing in 2018.

The official debut of the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE is scheduled for the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt. However, Mercedes-AMG displayed the internals of the new supercar at The Quail, ahead of its official debut. Other concepts on display included the Rimac Concept One, BMW Concept 8 Series, and Infiniti Prototype 9. A one-off Fux Fuchsia Rolls-Royce Phantom was also on display, along with the first American appearance of the Lamborghini Huracan Performante. Japanese designer Ken Okuyama introduced his Kode 0 which is based on the Lamborghini Aventador.

The Ferrari at 70 continued at 'The Quail' with a large Ferrari display. Modern and historic road-going Ferrari's lined the well-manicured lawn, showcasing the Prancing Horses storied past. The car selected for Best in Class honors was bestowed upon a long wheelbase California owned by Charles Wegner.

Judging is performed by the entrants and 14 cars are selected as Best in Class in their respective categories. This year the entrants selected a 1964 ATS 2500 GTS to enter the Rolex Circle of Champions to receive the 'Rolex Best of Show' Award. The elegant and lightweight mid-engine vehicle, suitable for both street and track, had not been shown for 16 years, when it won at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Its owner, Bruce Milner, received the sought-after Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona. Rolex has been the Official Timepiece of The Quail since 2005.

The ATS is one of just two or three examples in existence. With a sleek body designed by Franco Scaglione and mechanicals by ex-Ferrari virtuosos Carlo Chiti and Giotto Bizzarrini, the ATS set the motoring world reeling with the first mid-engine Italian sport and GT car. Chiti and Bizarrini were part of the 'palace revolt' at Ferrari, which resulted in Enzo's firing of six key employees in 1961. The ex-Ferrari soon began building their own Formula One and GT car. The GT made its debut at the 1963 Geneva Show. Only a few examples were completed by the factory before investors withdrew financial support, and the project collapsed. The example owned by Mr. Milner was the Paris show car, and was completed as the factory closed. Currently, it has just 900 km on its odometer and is completely original.

The Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award
Since 2016, the Quail has been home to the Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award for the best of show winners from concours events around the world. This year, the judges selected the Maserati A6GCS/53 Pinin Farina Berlinetta from the Monaco-based Destriero Collection that won the 2016 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. It is one of four Berlinetta-bodied sports cars from Pinin Farina and is considered to be the best preserved, as it is the only one that retains its original chassis and body.

Now in its second year, The Peninsula Classics Best of the Best Award brought together eight of the worlds finest race cars from the top international concours events to compete for the title of the most exceptional car in the world.
