Monterey Car Week is a ten-day celebration of automotive greatness, honoring the past but looking towards the future. The 2019 edition began with a display of historic race cars scheduled to compete at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion being driven from the track to Alvarado Street in Downtown Monterey. Over 500 historic and period-correct race cars would compete on the legendary Laguna Seca Raceway in 14 groups that spanned 103 years of motorsports. The earliest cars racing in the pre-war group were a 1911 National Speedway Roadster and 1911 Fiat S74, while the endurance group featured a more modern 2014 Lola Toyota Rebellion LMP1 prototype.
Elsewhere on the Monterey Penninsula, automotive enthusiasts could enjoy a Plethora of auctions, car shows, lifestyle events, and numerous other activities catering to every facet of car culture. The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, which was bestowed with the prestigious 2017 FIA Founding Members Club Heritage Cup, and the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance are the cornerstones of the famed Monterey Classic Car Week. Approximately 70,000 car enthusiasts attended the races over the four days, and that figure grew higher when factoring in the Monterey 'Pre-Reunion' of the previous week with over 300 historic race cars participating in the action.
This year's featured marque was the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) in honor of its 50th anniversary. Over a hundred noteworthy historic IMSA cars, organized into four IMSA-focused racing groups, took center stage including the 1991 AAR Toyota Eagle MkIII, Porsche 935s, 1976 Dekon Monzas, Greenwood Corvettes, Riley and Scott Mk IIIs, and Mazda GTO, GTU, and GTP cars. Additionally, there was a field of Formula Fords, which was the spark to IMSA's beginnings. Several celebrated IMSA drivers were on hand for the celebration, including Parker Johnstone, driving his original 1991-93 Acura Spice prototypes, and Tommy Kendall who was reunited with his 1982 Mazda RX-7 IMSA GTU. Comedian and actor Adam Carolla drove his 1979 Porsche 935 that Paul Newman drove in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and later took the title at the 1981 24 Hours of Daytona.
Off-track activities included car shows, demonstration laps, a marketplace full of exhibitors, and a special tribute to the 100th anniversary of Bentley. There were Q&A sessions and book signings with Hurley Haywood, John Morton, Sylvia Wilkinson, and John Nikas. Mitch Bishop and Mark Raffauf were also there to sign and discuss their new book, IMSA 1969-1989. Formula 1 Champion Mika Hakkinen drove the 1970 McLaren M8D/3 'Batmobile' for demonstration laps and participated in Q&A and autograph sessions. Former Formula 1 multiple-race winner, 24 Hours of Le Man's podium finisher, and Rolex Ambassador Mark Webber was on hand for pit lane commentary for guests of Rolex. Driving legend Hurley Haywood, whose career successes include three 24 Hours of Le Man's titles, five Rolex 24 at Daytona wins, and five season championships served as Grand Marshal. The Audi R8 LMS GT2, the most powerful racecar Audi Sport customer racing has produced was driven by nine-time 24 Hours of Le Man's winner, Tom Kristensen. Lexus revealed an LC convertible prototype, expanding its LC flagship coupe series, and Scott Pruett, a five-time overall winner at the Rolex 24 at Daytona drove the prototype for its first laps on North American soil.
Special awards were presented by WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca CEO Tim McGrane in a cheerful ceremony to bring the event to a close on Sunday afternoon. The Spirit of Monterey award was presented to Andrew Wait who collected 56 Formula Ford competitors for the 2019 Reunion.
Most groups raced in the morning and then afternoon on either Saturday or Sunday, while the Master's Endurance Legends and Historic Formula Ones had a race on each day of the weekend. Seven groups, mostly 'A' groups, raced on Saturday while the 'B' groups raced on Sunday.
