Karmann Ghia Club of North America, Disney Join Volkswagen for Epic Road Trip

Volkswagen of America, Inc. will celebrate its 50th anniversary with hundreds of Volkswagens, owners and enthusiasts in a national caravan beginning this Friday, May 13, at the Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, Calif., and ending in Manassas, Va.

The Karmann Ghia Club of North America and Disney, also celebrating silver anniversaries, will join Volkswagen as they tour the country with new and old Volkswagens and vintage Ghias.

Herbie, the vintage Volkswagen Beetle from the 1969 Disney movie The Love Bug, will be one of the stars of the show in anticipation of his reappearance as racecar #53 on the big screen. Herbie makes a comeback just in time for Volkswagen's half-century birthday in the upcoming Disney movie, Herbie Fully Loaded. Lindsay Lohan, Matt Dillon and Michael Keaton star in the movie featuring Herbie as a NASCAR contender.

The 'Cruise Across America' caravan of vintage Volkswagens departs from the Santa Monica Pier as chance would have it, Friday, May 13, and after two separate dealership stops in the area they hit the road and travel through May 29 across the United States, stopping at fifteen Volkswagen dealerships along the route. Each dealership stop will be open to the public and promises to become a grassroots car show, with many old and new Volkswagens, food, games, contests, and giveaways. Activities vary from location to location.

In addition to the many Volkswagen and Karmann Ghia enthusiasts who will join in the caravan, two Volkswagen Touaregs, a Volkswagen Phaeton, and a new Jetta are all along for the ride with the original Herbie. Scores of Volkswagen and Ghia enthusiasts are expected to bring their personal vehicles to each stop along the route, with some continuing their voyage either to Osnabruck, Germany for a Karmann Ghia celebration, or to Orlando, Fla., for a Disney celebration.

Founded in 1955, Volkswagen of America, Inc. is headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan. It is a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG, headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany.
