1949 Dodge Coronet Navigation
The Dodge model line was restyled for 1949, the first time since 1945. The 1949 line was introduced in April of that year and it was longer and lower than the 1948 models and with crisper and more modern styling. The Coronet nameplate was applied for the first time, marking the top available trim level. The Coronet, along with the entry-level Wayfarer series, helped Chrysler's Dodge Division sell nearly 300,000 units, earning them a second place in the medium-price car market.
The Coronet was powered by a 'flathead' inline six-cylinder engine, which delivered 103 horsepower from the 230 cubic-inch unit. The engine was mated to a three-speed Fluid Drive semi-automatic transmission as standard with the 'Gyro-Matic' variant as optional equipment. The six-passenger station wagon was priced at $2,865 with just 800 examples produced for 1949.
This car wears an older body-off-frame, 'nut and bolt' restoration. It retains all of its original wood and the original drivetrain, as well as the AACA National First Place badge that it earned in 1983. The car has its original 'Gyro-Matic' semi-automatic transmission, a heater, and a clock and a radio that was modified to provide AM/FM capability. There are a set of Firestone wide whitewall tires and chrome wire wheels, original Mopar fog lights, and a roof-mounted luggage rack, complete with period suitcases.
In 2010, this Coronet Station Wagon was offered for sale at the Vintage Motor Cars of Meadow Brook where it was estimated to sell for $60,000 - $80,000. As bidding came to a close, the car was sold for the sum of $63,800 including buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | Aug 2010
