Mercedes-Benz introduced the 230 SL at the Geneva Auto Show in March of 1963. This vehicle had the difficult task of succeeding the 190 SL. The monocoque design and its engine were derivatives of the Mercedes-Benz cars introduced in 1959. The engine used between 1963 and 1967 with a 2308cc six-cylinder unit that was virtually the same unit utilized in the 220 SE. The 230 SL had sporty attributes with the heightened comfort of a grand tourer, and was capable of racing from zero-to-sixty in 9.9 seconds - when equipped with the standard four-speed manual gearbox.
This left-hand drive example has been given a recent restoration. It has tan carpeting and white upholstery. It has a four-injected six-cylinder engine and a four-speed manual gearbox. There are disc brakes in the front and hydraulic drums in the rear. The car rides on a 94.5-inch platform with an independent suspension in the front and rear.
In 2010, this 230SL was offered for sale at the Vintage Motor Cars of Meadow Brook event presented by RM Auctions. The car was estimated to sell for $25,000 - $35,000 and offered without reserve. As bidding came to a close, the car had been sold for the sum of $22,000 including buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | Aug 2010
