1903 Knox Model C Navigation
This vehicle was sold new in San Francisco by the Knox dealer on Van Ness Avenue. The Wilder family of Santa Cruz, California, purchased it in 1903 for the approximate sum of $1200. This may have been the first gasoline-powered car brought to the Santa Cruz area. The current owners purchased the car from the original family in 2005.
This car is in completely original condition and has been maintained and never rebuilt or restored.
This Knox has a unique cooling system which has approximately 800, 1/4-inch pins screwed into the cylinder. The pins are used to dissipate the heat. A cooling fan in the front blows cool air over them. The factory called them the Knox 'Waterless' as they did not require any water. The public had their own nickname, the 'Porcupine Knox' as the engine looked a lot like the animal.
