The first Mercedes-Benz classic was the K series, begun in 1924 and produced until 1927 when the Model S was introduced. In 1932, the 500K series began production. The 500 denotes the 5-liter engine and the K is for the kompressor or supercharger that was fitted to the sports roadster. The 500K has all around independent suspension with a double wishbone front axle and a double-joint swing axle at the rear, a world first. Consequently it was a more comfortable and better handling car than Mercedes' previous S/SS/SSK generation of roadsters from the 1920s. Most of the 500Ks were bodied at the Mercedes-Benz Sindelfingen factory.
This 500K was purchased in 1936 at the London Automotive Exhibition by Princess Nina Mdivani, wife of Denis P.S. Conan Doyle (son of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes). They drove it throughout Europe on their honeymoon, starting where they were married at St. Donat's Castle in Wales that was owned by William Randolph Hearst.
