1938 Alfa Romeo Type 308 Navigation
One of several versions of the Alfa Romeo Type 308, this 1938 Alfa Romeo Special is powered by an 8-cylinder, 182.476 CID engine. This car, like so many others to appear at Indianapolis after World War II, was built for the Grand Prix circuits of Europe for Frenchman Raymond Sommer. It was a transition car built for the 1938 Grand Prix season.
After being sold to Americans and driven in the 1940 Indianapolis 500 by Chet Miller, it was driven to sixth position in 1946 by Lewis Durant and to seventh by Walt Brown in 1947. Durant was to have been the driver again in 1948, but Marion sold the car to Johnny Mauro, who, using Durant as a relief driver, placed eighth. Mauro was unable to qualify for the '500' in either 1949 or 1950, but drove the Alfa to several top finishes in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb.
What this type 308 'C' Alfa Romeo may have lacked as a road racer it made up for on the oval at Indianapolis. Indy 500 appearances for this Tipo 8C 308 was in 1946, 1947, and 1948 (6, 7 and 8th place).
Four examples were built.
