In 1912 Pierce-Arrow was perfecting its lineup of three distinct models that would carry it nearly to the end of the decade. The 48 was the cornerstone of the selections, offering more power and size than most contemporary automobiles yet with a balance and refinement rarely seen in such a large car. Equipped with a 525 cubic-inch, 6-cylidner engine and a four-speed transmission when most competitors were 3-speeds, the 48 met few roads it could not conquer. The year 1912 also saw the introduction of standard front doors as seen on this 7 passenger Touring, Pierce-Arrow's most popular body style.

This particular example was built in November 1911 as a 1912 model. Features include the concealed door hinges and gearshift and brake levers moved inside the body. Its earliest known owner was James P. Sullivan of Oceanside, California, who owned the car in the 1950s. In 1969, he made a cross-country trip with the car. After his passing in 1971, the Pierce was acquired by Phil Hill. Later owners included Bill Kuring, Bill Ziering, and E.C. 'Bill' Lawrence. While in Mr. Lawrence's care, the car was given a restoration where it received a Series 51 crankshaft.

Mr. Lawrence later sold the Pierce to Don Meyer of Lebanon, New Jersey. Mr. Meyer later sold it to Jim Grundy, who sold it to the current caretaker in 2007. Although in fine order, an extensive restoration soon followed. Upon completion, the car was shown at the 2010 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.
