1907 Cadillac Model K Navigation
The Cadillac Model K was powered by a horizontal single-cylinder engine that displaced 98.2 cubic inches and offered 10 horsepower. A four-cylinder model had been introduced in 1905, but their single-cylinder cars remained very popular and would continue in production through 1908. That was the same year that three Model K Cadillacs triumphed in the Dewar competition in England, being disassembled, their parts scrambled and reassembled, and then easily started. This was a demonstration and testament to precision manufacturing by Henry Leland. The Cadillac was later given the slogan 'The Standard of the World.'
Since under-seat engines were becoming outdated, Cadillac disguised the fact by mounting a dummy hood over the front axle on 1905 models, with a vertical radiator at the front. In 1906, they introduced new single-cylinder models K and M, which differed only in wheelbase. The Model M was two inches longer. The following year, the front fender contour was flattened and a factory-installed Victoria top became available.
Due to the shape of the seat, the Light Runabout was given the nickname 'Tulip.' This example has an older restoration. The coachwork is original and remains in excellent condition, with good paint and correct, good-condition brass.
In 2010, this Light Runabout was offered for sale at the Vintage Motor Cars of Hershey auction presented by RM Auctions. The car was estimated to sell for $35,000 - $45,000 and offered without reserve. As bidding came to a close, the car had been sold for the sum of $66,000 including the buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | Oct 2010
