1972 Dodge Challenger Hardtop

In 1933, because it seemed like a good idea, Erwin George 'Cannon Ball' Baker set out in a Graham-Paige model 57 Blue Streak 8 to drive across the country. He did this by himself, averaging 50 mph over 'roads' which had yet to benefit from the federal highway funding of the 1950s. Fast forward 38 years and Brock Yates had a better idea. Replay that 'Cannon Ball Run' run, using modern cars and high-quality public roads. Well, besides, what better way to thumb your nose at the national 55 mph speed limit was there? But like any job, it goes best if you have the proper tool. This is that tool.

Modified by noted NASCAR builder Cotton Owens, and later refined by Ron Nash, this Challenger finished second in 1972. It averages 76.3 mph. Not only was the trip done safely, but not even so much as an instrument bulb failed, a tribute to the quality of the performance aftermarket parts and a tip of the hat to the meticulous preparation skills of Mr. Owens and his staff. This same car finished third in the 1975 race.
