Powered by a 310 cubic-inch V8 engine producing 650 horsepower, the 1997 All Sport Ford Mustang driven by Tom Kendall would represent the final season of professional road racing for Roush Racing during the 1980-90s. In addition to the 1997 SCCA Trans-Am Championship, Kendall's 11 consecutive wins surpassed the previous record of eight back-to-back Trans-Am wins by the late Mark Donohue in 1968.
The big Donohue record was the most consecutive wins in Trans Am. Donohue had the record at 8 set in 1968. Kendall broke that by winning the ninth straight at Watkins glen. The tenth straight win came at Elkhart Lake and clinched his fourth championship, breaking a tie with Donohue for most titles, and surpassing the win streaks of Ayrton Senna (9 F3 wins) and Albert Ascari (9 sports car wins). The winning streak went to 11 in a row at Mosport, which broke Richard Petty's streak of 10 NASCAR wins in a row, making it the longest win streak in motorsports history. 11 poles was also a Trans Am record.
