The 'Formula' racing regulations of the 1960s stated racing cars required exposed wheels. Porsche developed a complaint single-seater that was based on the successful 718 RSK, but had a longer wheelbase in order to accommodate the larger fuel tank. Another need for the larger platform was to accommodate the steering wheel in the center of cockpit.
In 1960, the 718/2 won the unofficial Formula Two Manufacturers World Championship 'Coupe des Constructeurs.' The following year, it was used successful in Formula One competition.By Daniel Vaughan | May 2011
