Coupe
The fastest tri-oval in stock car racing until 1969 was Daytona. It was also the name given to a variety of cars that raced there. One was the Dodge Daytona introduced that year, an escalation in the aero-war that pushed stock cars closer to 200 mph. Ford won the 1968 NASCAR title with fastback models while the Dodge Charger proved unstable at high speeds. An improved design was made mid-season 1969, the Charger 500, but new entries from FoMoCo were even faster. In an all-out effort to produce the fastest, most stable stock car for the 1970 season, Chrysler's Special vehicles Group in Chelsea, Michigan set to designing the wildest car ever offered to the public, the Daytona.

First came the extended 18-inch, low drag nose that upset the aerodynamic balance of the test car; then came the struts and inverted aerofoil on the rear that balanced the car. Best results were achieved by dropping the front end requiring facing scoops over front fenders to accommodate upward wheel travel. Fine tuning the final form was achieved mid-March 1969, and 500 examples had to be built to meet NASCAR rules to debut the new entry at the Talladega 500 on September 14th of 1969.

Ford had previously attached the Talladega name to the car that the Dodge teams had to beat, and the new winged warriors went on to crush Ford and Mercury to win the 1970 NASCAR title. Buddy Baker achieved 200.447 mph setting a new closed course speed record at Talladega. Only 75 of 500 Daytona's received the formidable 426 Hemi.
