Just 1400 300SL coupes were produced before the convertible took its place in 1957. New, the gullwing has a price tag of about $7,300. That would translate to about $60,000 in 2011 dollars, a figure that's less than 10 percent of an original gullwing's minimum market value today.
The fuel injection system in the engine raised output to 215 horsepower at 5800 RPM. Mated with a four-speed manual transmission, it was capable of propelling the gullwing to a top speed of 161 mph, making it the fastest car of its day.
Like the race car, the production version had a lightweight tubular space frame, but with its own designation: W198. More significant, it had its own engine specification. The 300 SL race car was carburetor. The overhead cam inline six in the production gullwing was fed by a fuel injection system, a first for a production automobile.
