When this Camaro-bodied funny car made its noisy 1969 debut in Texas, it stood out from the crowd for two key reasons. The first was its power source. Unlike most funny cars of the day, it was propelled by a supercharged big block Chevy V8, rather than the much more common Chrysler Hemi. Since the car was sponsored by Dallas-based Doran Chevrolet, the choice was an easy one.
Its other distinction: the Camaro body shell sported a functioning driver's door, a rarity in the world of funny cars. This was a concession to the dimensions of the driver, Big Mike Burkhart. 'Big' was an understatement. At a reported 340 pounds, climbing through windows and roll cage bars was a challenge for Burkhart, and a hazard in an emergency situation.
The chrome moly tube steel chassis was fabricated at the prolific shops of Don Hardy Race Cars in Floydada, Texas, and the body shell was supplied by Fiberglass Limited, of Chicago.
Acquired by the current owners in 2002, the car's restoration consumed five years. The painstakingly faithful paint job was performed by five seniors at the Canton, Michigan, High School Career Center, the striping and gold leaf lettering by Mike 'Easy' Veazey. Power is supplied by a fuel-injected and supercharged 481 cubic-inch Chevy big block V8.
Completed in 2007, the Camaro took 'best engineered car' honors at a Goodguys Blue Suede Cruise event, and appears in nostalgia drag racing events.
