1934 Voisin C25 Navigation
Gabriel Voisin was among the earliest aviators, developing an aeroplane that undertook a controlled and circular flight as early as 1908. He is also credited with creating the first commercial aircraft factory, with his brother Charles. Voisin turned his hand to producing automobiles after World War I, but he continued to put his aeronautic expertise to good use; his company specialized in crafting cars of lightweight materials and exhibiting streamlined designs.
The C-25 Aerodyne featured a 3-liter sleeve-valve type motor with two carburetors developing 100 horsepower and delivering a top speed of over 85 mph. The transmission was a semiautomatic Cotal. The Aerodyne capitalized upon the public's growing fascination with streamlining and aerodynamics, and a project that Voisin hoped would remake its image in the wake of past bankruptcy. It was first shown in October 1934 at the 28th Paris Salon de l'Automobile. Built during a time of widespread economic hardship, the Aerodyne was Avant Garde, even in an era of progressive design. It was an exclusive car affordable only to the most affluent automobilist.
In the spring of 1935, Voisin displayed this special Aerodyne at the Lyon Fair and at the Concours d'Elegance at the Place Bellecours. With its two-tone paint, wrap-around pontoon fenders, low faired-in headlights, high beltline, skirted rear fenders, and automated, retractable roof; this Aerodyne cut a profile unlike anything else. In total, 28 C25s were produced; including six Aerodynes, four of which survive.
Restoring this Voisin was a labor of love for Peter and Merle Mullin, who had focused much of their collection on French coachwork and Art Deco design; they spared no expense in making certain that even the signature pattern of the interior cloth was faithfully recreated via loom. 'The Voisin is a four-door closed car, so it's actually an unexpected winner,' said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. 'However, the car's remarkable attention to detail brought it forward during the judging and it became a real crowd-pleaser.'
