Packard introduced its Tenth Series on August 21st of 1933. The new models, while appearing similar to their predecessors, incorporated a host of new mechanical innovations resulting from the rapid technological race taking place within the automobile industry. Advancements included an oil temperature regulator, which enabled the use of the same oil viscosity year-round as well as monitoring the temperature of oil to suit all driving conditionings. They had classically swept fender lines, skirted fenders, and vee'd radiator shells. The V-12 engine was installed in a new tapered frame and featured mechanical refinements such as a single dry-plate clutch and automatic choke. The 445 cubic-inch V-12 engine offered 160 horsepower.
This Packard 1005 Twelve, formerly called the Twin Six, wears Convertible Victoria coachwork by Dietrich. Ray Dietrich was Packard's most influential stylist in the early classic era, and his custom creations rapidly became production offerings. The Convertible Victoria gained popularity by moving rumble seat passengers inside.
This particular example is a Dietrich-designed Convertible Victoria and the 15th built in this style on the 142-inch wheelbase 1005 chassis. It is one of four known authentic survivors of the Style Number 3050 Convertible Victoria.
This car was delivered new by Packard Motor Car Company of New York in the Bronx on August 12th of 1933, per its original brass body tag on the firewall. The original owner sold it in 1946 to Thomas Lester of Ohio. The car remained with Mr. Lester for 22 years before it was sold to Benny Goldflies who kept it for 18 years. The next owner was Newt Withers of California who owned it for 25 years. While in Mr. Withers's care, it was given a restoration. After the work was completed, it was invited into the Packards International Circle of Champions in 2010 with 245/250 points. It also appeared at the 2011 edition of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.
Recently, the car has been updated with a new black top and blackwall tires.
