With the powerful and luxurious Mercedes 35 hp, the first automobile bearing the name Mercedes, in the end of 1900 a completely new design was created. Initiated by Emil Jellinek, also known as Monsieur Mercedes (a pseudonym that was inspired by the name of his 10-year old daughter), the new model gave the automobile a shape of its own for the first time. Terminating the age of motorized carriages in automobile design, the first Mercedes was (and still is) regarded as the first modern automobile. Its concept was immediately imitated by many other manufacturers. And it was very successful in motorsports right away. As early as 1902, an improved model range was presented under the name Mercedes-Simplex, indicating the improved usability which was regarded very easy in its time.
The 28/32 hp was introduced in 1904. It was a mid-size model within the Mercedes-Simplex range and became very successful.
Built from 1904 to 1909, the Mercedes Simplex 28/32 HP features a pressed steel frame, a honeycomb radiator, and a gate-change gearbox with a 4-speed transmission driving the rear-braked wooden-spoked wheels. The engine has 4-cylinders and a capacity of 5.3 liters, producing 30 horsepower and a top speed of around 40 mph. This car recently completed the London to Brighton run.
