Two stock chassis racers like this example competed in the 1911 Indy 500. One of those cars had the same chassis as this car. The second car was a later chassis with a shorter wheelbase. This 1908 American Simplex was built as a race car but it was not completed by the factory.
American Simplex started production in 1904; production of the Model D-50 commenced in 1908; and in 1910, the company's name was changed to Amplex. The Model D-50 was powered by a 7-liter, 4-cylinder, 2-cycle engine rated at 50 horsepower and paired with a three-speed transaxle.
