While this particular car did not run in the first Indy 500 race in 1911, it was built as a race car and was never completed by the factory. American Simplex started production in 1904. Production for the model D-50 started in 1908. Two stock chassis racers like this example competed in the 1911 Indy 500. One of those cars had the same chassis as this car. The second car was a later chassis with a shorter wheelbase. Model D-50 is a 7-liter 4-cylinder, 2-cycle engine rated at 50 horsepower. It had a three-speed transaxle. In 1910, the American Simplex name was changed to Amplex.
