1988 Penske PC-17 Navigation
The PC-17 made history in Indianapolis 500 qualifying in 1998. For the first time in Indy Speedway history, one team locked out Indy's front row in qualifying. Team Penske's Rick Mears took this Chevrolet-powered PC17 to the pole - his fourth pole - at 219.198 mph. Penske teammate Danny Sullivan lined up beside him in the Miller-sponsored PC-17/Chevy and Al Unser Sr started on the outside of the front row in the Hertz-sponsored Team Penske PC-17. It was unprecedented.
The race was the same sort of Penske performance with the three teammates leading 480 of the 500 miles. Rick Mears won his third Indy 500 and defending '500' champ Al Unser Sr took his PC-17 to third for a $1 million-plus payday for the new PC-17/Chevrolet. It was Team Penske's seventh Indianapolis 500 win on their 20th Anniversary in 'The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.'
The Penske PC-17 weighs 1550 lbs and is powered by an IImor Chevy DOHC V8 engine delivering 720 horsepower. It uses a Penske 5-speed for the speed oval courses and a 6-speed for the speed road course. It has a 40-gallon fuel tank to house the methanol gas.
