The 1961 Lincoln Continental Presidential Limousine is quite possibly the most famous and controversial automobile in history. The four-door convertible limousine was custom-built by Hess & Eisenhardt. The elegant automobile was well suited to the young, forward-thinking president. Unfortunately, tragedy struck when President Kennedy was assassinated in November of 1963 while riding in this car through the streets of Dallas, Texas. At the time, the car was painted dark blue and had a 1962 grille.
The Secret Service quickly took steps to have the vehicle rebuilt so it would better protect future presidents. They returned the car to Hess & Eisenhardt for modifications which included chrome bumper plugs and armor plating. The car was also repainted black at the request of President Johnson. A permanent steel top was fitted in 1964, and in 1967 the rear trunk was reinforced.
The car was in service from 1961 to 1977.
