1936 Duesenberg Model J Navigation
The Duesenberg Model J rode on a large 142.5-inch platform. An even larger, 153.5-inch chassis was available. Power was from a 420 cubic-inch, 32-valve, twin-cam straight eight engine offering 265 horsepower at 4200 RPM in normally aspirated form. That figure rose to 320 HP when the supercharger was installed.
This vehicle is chassis number 2566 and is powered by its original engine, number J538. The current owner has been its caretaker for six decades, originally buying it in December 1951. It has a Convertible Victoria body by the Rollston Company. The original owner is not known, the car appears to have been sold as a used car by the Chicago Factory Branch in December 1935, when it cost $5,225 and showed just 4,000 miles on the odometer. The next recorded owner was San Franciscan Leo Bertelsen in the immediate postwar period, who sold the car in 1949 to William Craig of Reno, Nevada. H.B. Bertillion of Oakland subsequently owned the car before it was finally acquired in 1951 by Paul Chamberlain.
The car is painted black over red, with a black leather interior and a white canvas top.
In 2011, the car was offered for sale in Monterey, Ca. presented by RM Auctions. It was estimated to sell for $800,000-$1,000,000. As bidding came to a close, the car had been sold for the sum of $902,000, including the buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | Mar 2012
