The 365 GTS 4, often called the Daytona Spyder, was one of the fastest and most beautiful and luxurious convertibles ever built by Ferrari. The 365 series replaced the 330 series in the Ferrari line. Both the Daytona Spyder and the 365 GTB 4 Daytona coupe were designed by Pininfarina while the bodies were produced by Scaglietti.
The 365 GTS 4 was built on the same chassis as the 275 GTB. The main differences were the unique styling and the larger 4.4-liter DOHC engine that produced 352 hp and a top speed of 174 mph. The car was equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission. U.S. models sported pop-up headlights that eventually became standard on all Daytonas after 1971.
This car was built in September 1973 and shipped to Luigi Chinetti Motors in Greenwich, Conn. and sold to its first owner in April 1974. It was number 92 of 122 built that year and was 1 of only 12 cars produced in Blue Metallizato Dino. It was shown at the New York Auto Show that same month before entering the care of its first owner, Ben H. Bryant of Shaker Heights, Ohio, in June 1974. It is believed that while it was in Mr. Bryant's care, it was repainted in red before being sold to Ferrari of Los Gatos, California, in April 1986. Ownership later changed to Cochran Water Mill Properties of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (May 1986), then, while under restoration, to Sid Ferris of Portland, Oregon (1986), next to Eiichi Ida of Tokyo, Japan (October 1987), before eventually returning to the United States and into the care of Jerome Sullivan of Vero Beach, Florida (March 1993). Mr. Sullivan exhibited the car at the 1994 Palm Beach Cavallino Classic at The Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, Florida, where it received a class award.
During the late 1990s (still owned by Mr. Sullivan), this Ferrari was given a bare-metal restoration by Wayne Obry of Motion Products in Neenah, Wisconsin. The work included rebuilding the matching-numbers V12 engine, re-plating the exterior chrome, refinishing the Borrani wire wheels, and performing mechanical work to the brakes and ignition system.
After the restoration was completed, it was sold to Adrian Hamilton in the United Kingdom in September 1998 before returning to the U.S. by February 2000. Ownership changes throughout the following decade included owners in North Carolina and Chicago, Illinois, and Fort Worth, Texas circa 2008. The current caretaker purchased the car in 2013.
The current owner returned the car to its original factory specifications, with the Pininfarina coachwork refinished in its original Blu Dino Metallic livery. New Beige hides were installed with contrasting Nero lateral strips on the seat inserts, Beige door panels, Nero carpeting, and suede 'mouse fur' dashboard upholstery. There is a three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel, longitudinal center console-mounted Becker Mexico radio, Borrani wire wheels, hexagonal center-locking wheel nuts, and Michelin XWX tires. The matching-numbers engine was refreshed, and an electric power steering system was installed.
After the restoration, the Spider won Best in Show by Ferrari Club of America judges at the 2018 Concorso Ferrari in Palm Beach, Florida. At the 2020 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, it received an Amelia Award in the Scaglietti Production Class.
This Ferrari is the 92nd of 121 production 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spiders.
