1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing Navigation
Max Hoffman requested 1,000 300 SL Gullwings but production soon exceeded that figure of the semi-hand-built car. Production reached 1,400 units. The 300SL Coupe was discontinued after the 1957 model year and remains one of the most coveted of all sports cars ever built.
There were 67 examples of the 300SL Coupes produced by Daimler between August and December 1954, accounting for 12% of total production.
This example was shipped new to the Mercedes distributor in New York on December 30th, 1954. It was finished in Medium Red and delivered new with Rudge wheels. The car is now finished in metallic silver-grey with red leather upholstery and still rides on Rudge wheels.
In 2011, the car was offered for sale at the St John auction presented by RM Auctions. It was estimated to sell for $650,000 - $750,000. As bidding came to a close, the car was sold for $676,500, including buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | Oct 2011
