Nicknamed the 'ladybug' in Japan, the 360 was Fuji Heavy Industries attempt to design a kei car: small inexpensive, 'people's car' of under 360cc that could seat four. Subaru built 392,000 examples from 1958 to 1971. Japan needed the 356cc Ek31/E32 parallel 2-stroke, air-cooled, 16 horsepower twin engine, the US import was fitted with a 423cc version which gave more. In a rear-engined car that weighed about 900 pounds (the steel monocoque used a fiberglass roof), via a 3-speed manual transmission, 60 mph could be reached, although zero to 50 mph could take as much as 37 seconds.
