In the early 1890s, Rene Panhard and Emile Levassor built their first cars, a series of four identical models. These were followed quickly by other models, giving Panhard & Levassor the claim of first in continuous production. With fellow countrymen Serpollet, DeDion, and Peugeot, Panhard & Levassor were the world's earliest automobile industry. It was also France that gave the name 'automobile' by combining Greek and Latin roots.
Panhard & Levassor were pioneers, introducing many industry 'firsts' such as the wheel steering (1896) and tubed radiators (1897). By 1902, there were over 1,000 Panhard automobiles in production. Panhard & Levassor were among the first motorsport competitors.
The Panhard automobiles continued to evolve and introduce new and exciting technologies. In 1910, the firm adopted sleeve valves for some models, the same year that the name of Levassor, who had died after an 1897 racing accident, was dropped from the cars. By 1924, all models had four-wheel brakes.
The bodies of the Panhard automobiles became more aerodynamic during the 1930s, with rounded contours and curved glass win the windshield pillars. The pinnacle of their aerodynamic endeavors was the Dynamic model of 1936. They featured baroque styling, torsion bar suspension, backbone chassis, and an unusual driving position just right of center. This, however, was soon abandoned became it required the driver to slide across the seat for entry and exit. The design for the Dynamic was courtesy of Louis Bionier. The Art Deco body caused a sensation, and the level of road performance was high.
This X76 Dynamic sedan has been driven only 1,500 kilometers after receiving a sympathetic restoration. It is painted in claret on ivory with a tan wool interior.
In 2011, this vehicle was offered for sale at the Quail Lodge auction presented by Bonhams. It was sold for the sum of $76,000 inclusive of the buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | Nov 2011
