1905 Packard Model N Tourer

  • Chassis Number: 1207
One of the very first 'horseless carriages' built by the new Winton Motor Carriage Company of Cleveland, Ohio was purchased in 1898 by James Packard. A short time later, Mr. Packard began to encounter problems and returned his new auto to the Winton factory several times. Alexander Winton refused to make the refinements suggested by Mr. Packard and finally told him that if he wanted a better automobile to build it himself.

This was the inspiration Packard needed, and soon the Packard Company was born. By 1900, brothers James and William Packard, who owned the Packard Electric Company in Warren, Ohio, and produced incandescent bulbs, began selling their first production automobiles. Packard became very well known for its luxury autos which were in production until 1958.

This 1905 Model N features the distinctive radiator shape that became a Packard trademark for decades. Power is from a four-cylinder engine offering 28 horsepower. It rides on a 106-inch wheelbase and originally sold for $3,600.
