The Silver Cloud III was introduced in 1963 and it brought with it some necessary updates, including updates to its earlier V-8 models. Rolls-Royce built the 3rd series car with a heavier crank and a larger SU carburetor and an increased compression ratio of 9:1.
The Continental was a high-speed luxury touring automobile derived from previous in-house designs. Both the Rolls-Royce and its Bentley sibling received sporting Mulliner Park Ward coachwork.
The Continentals had the typical four headlamps of the 3rd series and were available as a fixed-head coupe and a drophead coupe. Around 328 Silver Cloud III Continentals received non-standard coachwork, of which just 100 were believed to be built as Mulliner Park Ward Continentals.
This particular Continental was specified for use in the United States. It is one of just 49 left-hand drive variants. It was built in the last year of production and was fitted with air-conditioning and power windows. The car was purchased new by Delbert Coleman of San Francisco. It left the factory finished in dark green over beige leather.
In the late 1960s, Mr. Coleman sold the Drophead to Lester Braunstein, who displayed the car and won an RROC award at the 1971 California meet. It passed to another Beverly Hills collector and author Bob Gottlieb in 1971.
With 27,000 miles on the odometer, the car passed to its next owner, who chose to have it repainted in black. The current owner acquired the car in 2011. Currently, it has 46,000 miles on the odometer.
In 2012, the car was offered for sale at the Gooding & Company auction in Scottsdale, Az. It was estimated to sell for $200,000 - $250,000. As bidding came to a close, the car had been sold for the sum of $187,000 inclusive of buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | Jan 2012
