This Mercedes-Benz 300SL was ordered through the Mercedes-Benz dealer in Tokyo, Japan by Colonel John Burnside. After the car accrued approximately 110,000 miles, the Colonel elected to have many of the engine components overhauled and commissioned Wolfgang Fengler of Diesel Research in Torrance, California, to perform the mechanical work.
The car retains its original black fabric top, complementing the original interior which still features the seat belts custom installed at the factory.
The Colonel ordered the car with the removable hardtop which still remains in its original shipping crate with the Colonel's name stenciled on the lid.
In 2012, the car was offered for sale by Gooding & Company at their Scottsdale, Az. auction. The car was estimated to sell for $675,000 - $825,000. The car found new ownership for the sum of $693,000, inclusive of buyer's premium.By Daniel Vaughan | Feb 2012
