1938 MG SA Tickford Drophead Foursome

MG, acronym for Morris Garages, began as a British sports car manufacturer in the 1920s. Besides the well-known sports cars, MG also produced a larger, more family-suited series of cars, beginning with the MG SA. This SA Tickford, along with the SA Saloon, are the largest MGs ever built. They were produced from 1936 to 1939.

MG became a division of BMC in 1967, and later part of the British Leyland Motor Corporation. By 2000 it was part of the MG Rover Group, which went bankrupt in 2005. The assets and MG brand were purchased by SAIC. During the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, MG offered affordable sporty cars to the masses.

These luxury cars were intended not for motor sport as such, but rather the gentle British road rallies of the time, especially in the Concours d'Elegance which concluded many events. MG SA Tickfords won often and MG promoted this success.

Salmons & Sons (founded in 1830) produced the 'Tickford' folding top from which the model gets it popular name and still exists today as a division of Aston Martin.

Unique features include a windscreen that folds out to provide additional air, leather and English walnut trimmed interior with brass nautical instrumentation, trafficators (turn signals), a chassis central lubrication system, and hydraulic jacks at each of the wheels which permit the car to be elevated from the ground either front, rear or both. Options on this car include a seven valve (tube) radio, a lighted rear number plate, Mellowtone dual horns, a rare correct radiator mascot 'midge', and a rare original rear bumper. The duo green paint scheme features Ulster green on the fenders and Dublin/Apple green on the body.

The majority of the restoration, including paint and mechanical was done by the current owner over 30 years.

93 (possibly as few as 57) MG (Messa) SA Tickfords survive worldwide.
