Rolls-Royce produced 2,044 Silver Cloud IIIs plus 253 with the long wheelbase. Chassis number LCSC77C is one of 79 'CSC' (Coachbuilt Silver Cloud) series cars. The car shows 56,405 miles on the odometer. The overhead-valve V8 engine has two SU carburetors and delivers 200 horsepower. There are power-assisted hydraulic front and hydro-mechanical disc brakes, and a four-speed automatic transmission.
The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was introduced in October 1965, but because its monocoque construction and revolutionary suspension systems were so complex, early production was cautious. To maintain a steady flow of cars for market, the company was faced with a unique problem. They could still build the Cloud chassis and engine but could no longer obtain the standard steel bodies. Therefore, when early Shadow production was delayed, the company turned a perceived negative into a positive by creating an entirely new series of coachbuilt cars built on Cloud chassis.
By the mid-1960s, Rolls-Royce had merged its two coach-building acquisitions, H.J. Mulliner and Park Ward, into one. The mid-1950s Mulliner Park Ward fixed-head coupe saloon was re-designed into a drophead coupe. Production continued with this new car until March of 1966, well after the Cloud series officially ceased production in 1965, yet it was produced concurrently with the new Silver Shadow.
This original left-hand drive car was delivered new in 1966 to Los Angeles and came equipped with air-conditioning and power steering, brakes, windows and top. It is finished in its original 'Valentine's Black' lacquer, with black convertible top, black Connolly leather interior and blackwall tires.
In 2012, this car was offered for sale at the Amelia Island auction presented by RM Auctions. The car was estimated to sell for $225,000 - $300,000. As bidding came to a close, the car had been sold for $198,000 inclusive of buyer's premium.
