This Ruetter-built Sport Roadster Typ 540 K9/1, perhaps more popularly known as a 1500S American Roadster, is unique in that it is the only steel-bodied car built to the original blueprint #540.00.202 of July 1952 that was to be the next step from the 'too expensive' aluminum competition roadsters from Heuer (of which there were 16) and the 'mass market' Max Hoffman-inspired steel Speedster of 1954. Hoffman sold this car to Hubert Brundage (of Brumos fame) who thought it was to be aluminum. Even so it won its first race. Then it went to the 1954 Sebring 12-Hours to finish 15th overall. It then led a less-than-charmed life until 'recognized' in the late 1980s for what it really was. The restoration took 10 to 15 years to complete.
