There were three examples of the BT33 built. The first example, BT33/1, was raced by Rolf Stommelen during the 1970 season. The car was crashed during practice for the British Grand Prix, so Mr. Stommelen piloted chassis number 3. The car was repaired for the start of the 1971 season and first driven by Graham Hill and later by Tim Schenken.
Chassis number BT33/1 had its best finish in the hands of Stommelen at Spa in 1970 with a fifth place finish.
After the car's World Championship career, it raced for several more seasons in South Africa where John Love achieved two victories. In recent years, the car has finished first at the 2006 and 2008 Monaco Grand Prix in the hands of historic racer Duncan Dayton.By Daniel Vaughan | May 2012
