This 1931 Alfa Rome 8C 2300 Monza (first registered in June of 1932) is powered by an 8-cylinder, 2,300 cc, over-head-cam, supercharged engine with chassis and engine number 2111043.
In early 1932, Alfa Romeo built a batch of 'works' Monzas, with Nuvolari winning the Monaco Grand Prix with one, but it is impossible to say which car was which. After the introduction of the Tipo B single-seater, these Monzas were sold off to private owners. This particular car was delivered to French driver Jean Pierre Wimille in June 1932, and he finished 6th in the Pontedecimo-Giovi hillclimb before returning to France, where he won the Lorraine GP, but otherwise, the car had little success. The next owner was Italian Giovanni Battaglia, who had many top-five finishes in Italy in 1933-1935, but his most important successes were in the Mille Miglia, where he was 4th in 1934 and 34th in 1935. The car then disappeared from view before emerging to race in the Italian territory of Eritrea in East Africa in 1938. During the war, British servicemen commandeered the car, but it stayed there in local ownership after hostilities ended before moving to the USA in the 1960s.
