The Chevrolet Corvette's racing career spans decades and includes some of the most famous people ever to be involved in racing have had an association with Corvettes. This example was originally prepared by one of the most famous American racers of all time, Mr. Roger Penske.
Zora Arkus-Duntov, the GM engineer and the individual considered by many to be the father of the Corvette, contacted Penske and offered some special racing parts which had been developed by Chevrolet especially for the corvette. This was incentive enough for Penske to acquire an L-88 version in early 1966 and transform the car from street car to race car in preparation for the Daytona race that year.
In 1966 Chevrolet Central Office issued a production order for this car to be built with the first factory 427 L-88 engine and competition race package. Based on Duntov's recommendation Penske hired Dick Guldstrand to assemble a team for the race. Penske hired the experienced team of Dick Guldstand, Ben Moore and George Wintersteen.
In practice laps the L88 registered some of the quickest times ever recorded at Daytona. The Penske L88 was leading its class when it collided with a Triumph and sustained front end damage. It was nearly disqualified for having no front lights when the Penske crew taped two flashlights to the fenders to satisfy the letter of rules. They did not provide much illumination and Guldstand finished the race by following the taillights of the Ferrari Team Car. The L-88 broke the GT record, finished first in GT class and placed 12th overall. This was an impressive accomplishment for the car's first race.
Sunoco extended their sponsorship for the 12 Hours of Sebring where Moore and Wintersteen raced the Penske L-88 to 9th overall and again winning the GT class making it the first car ever to score back-to-back victories in the Daytona 24 Hours and the 12 Hours of Sebring.
The car has currently been restored to its present 1966 Sebring 12 Hour race configuration.
