1966 Aston Martin DB6 Convertible Coupe

By the mid-1960s Aston Martin had fully developed the DB series of cars. Beginning with the DB2 in 1950 and culminating with the DB6 the cars were all Grand Tourers. All the models were raced and established an excellent racing pedigree for the firm.

Powering the DB6 was a 3995cc double-overhead camshaft six-cylinder engine designed by Tadek Marek. The engine, with its triple SU carburetors, developed 282 horsepower at 5500 RPM. The transmission was a ZF five-speed unit. The rear suspension used helical coil springs with ride control that was adjustable from inside the car.

Between October 1965 to October 1966, Aston Martin used the last 37 of the Aston Martin DB5 chassis to make another convertible model. These 37 cars were known as 'Short Chassis' Volantes and were the first Aston Martins to have the 'Volante' name. These cars differ to the DB5 convertible models as they feature DB6 split front and rear bumpers and rear lights used on the DB6.

This example was originally sent to the Aston Martin dealer in New York City. There it went unsold for three years. It was returned to the Aston Martin factory in Newport Pagnel and converted to right hand drive. It was first sold in London. The current owner purchased it in London in 1988. It is one of only 22 still existing.
