In 1958, the Parisienne was introduced in Canada as a full-size Pontiac on the exterior and interior with Chevrolet underpinnings. The nameplate grew into a full line of 2- and 4-door cars, hardtops and convertibles, that ranged from low-end 6-cylinder PowerGlide equipped cars to luxuriously appointed V-8s comparable to Chevrolet Impala and Pontiac's Grand Prix.
The line was popular in Canada, and later, the nameplate became a US market Pontiac that lasted in production until 1986. With more economical Chevrolet than Pontiac components under the skin, Parisienne pricing was marginally higher than US market Chevrolets, even when fitted with high-performance engines such as the 409 during the early 1960s and later 454 V-8s. These cars were built in GM of Canada's Oshawa, Ontario assembly plant alongside US market assembly lines.
The redesigned 1958 Pontiacs were lower and larger than their predecessors, and changes included quad headlamps, broadside coves with rocket-shaped trim, conservative fins, and hooded quad taillamps. Like its Chevrolet sister, the 1958 Pontiac would prove to be a one-year-only design.
Canadian Pontiacs were manufactured in Oshawa, Ontario. The top-of-the-line Parisienne offered a mix of Impala and Bonneville features and it was offered in both hardtop and convertible models. While the exterior sheet metal and interior appointments were derived from the U.S. market Bonneville, the chassis, and drive-train of Canadian-built Pontiacs were 100% Chevrolet.
The X-member frame, and W-block 348 engine on this particular example would utilize the same components that could be found on a 1958 Impala! Only 759 Parisienne Convertibles were built for 1958, making them an extremely rare sight when new and quite scarce today
This first-generation Parisienne, with Pontiac Bonneville presentation of the time, was originally sold at the 1958 London (Ontario) Motor Products Show as an early example of 759 Parisiennes produced during the 1958 model year and one of only a few convertibles built. It is fitted with a high-performance 348 cubic-inch, Tri-Power V8 engine, power steering, power brakes, power windows, automatic transmission, and bucket seats. It also features the very rare 'Sportable' AM transistor radio, which is removable. Perfect for picnics when a rock 'n' roll soundtrack was desired!
