1967 Plymouth Belvedere GTX

In the muscle car world, claims to be the first are, quite often, unmerited. But, in the case of this 1967 GTX convertible, it is indeed acknowledged to be the very first 426 Hemi-powered GTX convertible produced. Coming off the line in September of 1966, it is equipped with a myriad of desirable options including power steering and brakes, the 727 Torqueflite transmission and more.

1967 was the inaugural year for the GTX, Plymouth's first 'luxury performance' model, each lavishly appointed with unique interior trim, a pit-stop gas cap, redline tires, dual hood scoops and a host of standard features. Plymouth offered the choice of either a 440 cubic-inch engine or the venerable 426 Hemi, as seen in this example.

It is believed that in 1967, a mere 17 Hemi powered convertible GTX's were produced, with only ten equipped with the Torqueflite transmission. This particular GTX served considerable street and track duty before being stored indoors for many years. It was well known in the northeast, and stories are often told of the original owners Grandmother tearing up the asphalt at various tracks.
