1959 Chrysler New Yorker Navigation
Throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, Chrysler's New Yorker Town & Country was America's ultimate prestige station wagon. Prices were astronomical - over $5,000 - but the New Yorker represented the pinnacle of the wagon-making craft.
The 1959 New Yorker is a superb example of the 'Forward Look' series that was introduced to rave reviews in 1957. The format set a template for American station wagons that would dominate the genre for the next two decades - a folding second-row seat, an available rear-facing third fold-down seat, and a rear window that rolled down into a fold-down one-piece tailgate. Consumer Reports had a conflicted view of the lavish 1959 New Yorker: 'Luxury fabrics and appointments deprive the New Yorker wagon of utility, but on the basis of overall quality, this wagon ranks highly.'
This 1959 New Yorker Town & Country is powered by a 350 horsepower version of the 'Golden Lion' 413 cubic-inch V8 and a pushbutton-controlled TorqueFlite automatic transmission. It is abundantly equipped with options, including dual air conditioning, air ride suspension, 'Auto-Pilot' (cruise control), and auto-dimming headlights.
