1903 Packard Model F Navigation
In 1903 a Packard Model F, nicknamed 'Old Pacific,' drove from San Francisco to New York in 61 days - an incredible feat for a car with a top speed of 30 mph. This was accomplished by the fact that the car was capable of carrying enough gasoline for 200 miles, oil for two days, and water for four weeks. The 184 cubic-inch, 12-horsepower engine comprised a single monumental cylinder, with self-mechanical advance and retard ignition, mated to a three-speed transmission.
The Packard Model F was capable of carrying gasoline sufficient for 250 miles, oil for two days, and water for four weeks. This Model F rear Entrance Tonneau was initially delivered to its first owner in Toronto, Canada, and was subsequently showcased in the prestigious collections of William Harrah, General William Lyon, and the Las Vegas Imperial Palace. It was restored by William Harrah in the 1960s, owned later by marque expert Steve Babinsky, and has won many awards over time.
The Packard Model F was powered by a single-cylinder engine that displaced 183.8 cubic inches (bore & stroke: 6 x 6.5 inch) and produced 12 horsepower. It had a three-speed sliding gear manual transmission, rear-wheel mechanical brakes, live axles with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and shaft drive with bevel-gear rear differential. A total of 255 examples were built in 1903 and each had a base price of around $2,500.
